Crown Royal Maple

Review by: TOModera

Being part of two Secret Santa Swaps this year was a great treat. I’m utter crap when it comes to two things: Identifying Mystery Drams and Shopping for Gifts.

So when Porkpants81 (not to be confused with the other 80 people with non-Kosher or Halal pants) sent me a perfect bevy of drams, I was elated. I didn’t think anyone would be that amazing to pick through my reviews (all 180+) and ensure that I hadn’t reviewed them.

One of the batch was the “joke” gift, or as he put it “A bottle my buddy got me as a joke. You’ll guess it as soon as you open it”.

Really? Have you been following along, oh purveyor of bacon leggings? Oh wearer of chops? Oh booty hamilicious one? I suck at mystery reviews!

And then I opened it.

Conclusion: Okay, I’m going to say this is Crown Royal Maple. Normally I’d leave it all at that, let you go about your day, but not this time.

You see, if I may be serious for a moment, I do like to drink different drams. And I do like Drambuie, and I do like Seagrams 7 Honey, because I like flavoured booze. Can’t help it, it’s just the way I am. Also I don’t like mixing as it gives me a headache.

So here’s the thing: My joke answer above is the sample answer most people have. Because it’s an easy joke. But I want to review Drambuie, and Seagram’s 7 Honey, and Jack Honey in the future, and if I give them a number, I should give this a number as well.

Final Score: 35.

The reason is that they’ve completely flavoured this. There’s no room for whisky. With other flavoured whiskies, or whiskies finished in other casks, they’ve gone through and paired the flavours well. And Crown Royal (if I’m right) can be paired with Maple well.

This is maple flavouring with alcohol. It goes well on Pancakes, not as well as Evan Williams Maple Flavoured whisky syrup, or homemade Jack Daniels and Maple syrup.

Scoring Legend:

  • 95-100: As good as it gets. Jaw-dropping, eye-widening, unforgettable whisky.
  • 90-94: Sublime, a personal favorite in its category.
  • 85-89: Excellent, a standout dram.
  • 80-84: Quite good. Quality stuff.
  • 75-79: Decent whisky worth tasting.
  • 70-74: Meh. It’s definitely drinkable, but it can do better.
  • 60-69: Not so good. I might not turn down a glass if I needed a drink.
  • 50-59: Save it for mixing.
  • 0-49: Blech.
