About Us

We’re a coalition of friends who share a love of distilled spirits. We met through Reddit, writing reviews mostly on r/Scotch. In June 2023, we were prompted to set up a home for ourselves offsite.

After 20 minutes of hard work, here it is!

Please note that between all of us, we have a review backlog of around 7,000. These will slowly be added to this site, meanwhile, you can find many of them on the various individual blogs or on Reddit.

The Auditor

I am The Auditor (I go by LifoanAccountant on Reddit). I have drank my fair amount of single malt but got started writing reviews about Single Malt and Bourbon in 2018. Over 1000 total reviews later and I focus mainly on Sugar Cane Spirits now. However, single malt is a still a spirits category I enjoy greatly as is Agave and Brandy. I wouldn’t go as far as to call myself an expert but I am the resident Rum obsessed writer.

DemiTastes

I started reviewing whiskey in 2020 by seeking out the kinds of things my friends might want to try, and quickly moved to seeking the unique and interesting. These days I focus most of my energy on American Single Malt Whiskey, including creating the subreddit /r/AmericanSMW. I enjoy Single Malts from around the world, as well as a little of everything else, including Bourbon, Brandy, Rum, and Mezcal. I’ve been using names starting with “Demi” since forever, so when I noticed my habit of pouring what seemed to be the smallest drams around the web, and the obvious pun with the small espresso cup called a demitasse, I decided that the name “DemiTastes” only made sense.

Dustbunna

I write about whisky, time, and transformation. I like reviewing full bottles as they really give me space to understand what I’m tasting and how it may change with air, water, and rest. Since it takes months for me to finish a bottle, each review requires patience to write, so I post less frequently. I mostly drink malt whisky (I cut my teeth on Scotch, but enjoy malt spirits from across the world), as well as occasional mezcal, rum, and brandy. Based in Colorado, USA.

Federal Agent

I am Federal Agent (Terroir Chronicles)

My malt journey started in November of 2020. My first malt was a Kirkland (Costco’s house brand) 12-year Blended Scotch. Coming primarily from Bourbon and Rum, I was intrigued by the complexities. From there I fell in love with Bruichladdich, specifically Port Charlotte. This trickled into Clynelish Wax, Talisker pepper, Lagavulin minerals, and a healthy scoop of Campbeltown fever. I can usually be found chasing the next Islay bottlings, while consistently telling someone why the pour I just had was ‘incredible’ or ‘amazing’. I’ve been told that I’m…

The hype man.

Maltenberg

I write about whisky and other spirits with a deep interest in the science that makes it work. I’ve been enjoying Scotch whisky for over 20 years and call Talisker my favorite distillery. I keep an open mind to try and learn new things. You’ll find me reviewing whiskies from all over the world and occasionally other spirits as well. I also enjoy meticulously prepared cocktails. I have called Colorado home for most of my life and I’ve been able to travel extensively throughout my life.

The Muskox

I’m the token Canadian. After a chance trip to Scotland in 2017, I got into whisky. One thing led to another, and I went and reviewed 1000 whiskies in 6 years. I know, classic story.

I enjoy all styles of scotch whisky, but find myself particularly drawn to delicate, tropical, Highland drams. Oh, and Bowmore. And Imperial. And Arran. In my non-whisky time, I enjoy music and rocks and rock music.

Why “The Muskox”? I dunno, I’ve always liked them. They’re from my homeland, and they’re very fuzzy.

Raygun

I’m Raygun, also known as unbreakablesausage on Reddit (long story). I drank Scotch occasionally (mostly at family gatherings) for years, but started getting more interested after an introduction and tasting from a Scottish acquaintance. That led to buying my first bottle (Highland Park 12). Little did I know the rabbit hole that opened for me.

I’ve now tried over 600 whiskies and own more bottles than I like to admit to anyone who isn’t also in the hobby. Scotch remains my first love, but I’ve branched out to American and world whisky, and dabbled in brandy as well.

Rye Am Legend

Still in the infancy of reviewing, I started studying various spirits in-depth at around the start of 2020. I knew what I liked, just not why exactly, so I began writing down my notes on whiskies and sharing them with friends. A year or so later, I started to publicly publish reviews and keep a personal digital archive of my tasting notebooks.

Deep into mezcal and scotch these days, I find enjoyment in nearly every category of spirit. Sharing drams with good friends is my only goal in this hobby. Join along as I continue my education and exploration of distilled spirits.

TOModera

I’m TOModera, known as TOModera on Reddit, and TOModera just about anywhere. I mostly drink Scotch, and got started because someone handed me a fancy sample (Balvenie 30) I started reviewing. I have tried over 2,200 whiskies now, and do it because I like to write. While I do review other whiskies, not so much other spirits or alcohols, because I’m a snobby snob who snobs in my preferred place. Also I like to be silly and joke around, so I’m happy that the Mad Utters let me join… wait, we’re called something else?

Whiskery Turnip

Writing whisky reviews from Hawaiʻi and beyond. My wife is a peat monster; her influence can be seen in my preferences for earthy, dirty, and sometimes very weird malts. If given a choice, I will almost always choose whisky from a refill cask, especially regarding sherry. I am a big fan of the world whisky scene, especially single malts. You will not find my reviewing much more than whisky, but I am also a big fan of sake.

I can also be found at Whiskeryturnip.com and occasionally on Instagram when I remember it exists. Also known as b1uepenguin on Reddit.

My Scotch journey began in my junior year of university. I was lucky enough to be able to travel to the UK with a roommate of mine to visit a mutual friend of ours. It was during Lent and my roommate had given up alcohol for it. Naturally, I became his personal taste tester of whisky for the trip and began my more than a decade long love affair with Scotch.

While I prefer fruitier whiskies, Arran and Linkwood are personal favorites, I enjoy just about anything. Just don’t give me any Highland Park. Or anything from Orkney.
