Tamdhu 20 Year (2000) Hunter Laing Old Malt Cask K&L Wines pick

Review by: The Muskox

This will be my second 20yo Old Malt Cask K&L Wines pick hogshead-mature Tamdhu! They sure have a type.

Distillery: Tamdhu.

Bottler: Hunter Laing.

Region: Speyside.

ABV: 52%, cask strength.

Age: 20 years old. Distilled in 2000. Bottled in 2021.

Cask type: Refill Hogshead.

Price: This went for $80 USD at K&L Wines.

Color: Light gold. No colour added, chill-filtered.

Nose: Brisk and fruity. Rainbow sherbet, grapefruit + pomelo peels, and green grapes. Foamy cappuccino with biscotti. Slightly dusty and leathery. Untoasted sesame seeds. Sweet herbal notes of basil and dandelions.

Palate: Medium-light texture. Arrives very light with lots of citrus oils, sherbet, and some elderflower. Mineral on the development, with limestone pools, club soda, and white pepper. Hints of old punky wood and dunnage. Muscat grape (stem) sweetness towards the back end.

A dribble of water rounds the fruit, and brings some of that creamy coffee note from the nose.

Finish: Bright and effervescent. Grapefruit peel, sherbet, nectarine, and elderflower. Nougat with almonds. Sharpened pencils and Rockets.

Possible SMWS bottling name: “La Criox-filled karst sinkhole”

Notes: Meh. This has of a very blend-juice-y Lowland profile almost, similar to my experiences with Littlemill and Inverleven. The water helped things and brought the score up by a point or so. But this is definitely a pass at K&L.

Final Score: 77.
