Indri Trini

Review by: dustbunna

Indri is a single malt whisky brand by Piccadily Agro Distillery, who are a newcomer on the Indian single malt scene, but evidently have provided malt stock for a number of other brands in India for years (they started distilling in 2007.) Trini, also known as ‘Three Wood’, uses 100% 6-row Indian malted barley, and is a vatting of ex-bourbon casks, ex-French wine casks, and PX sherry casks. I went through this bottle quite a bit faster than I usually do, because I was interested in sharing it with so many people.

Distillery: Piccadily Agro.

Bottler: Distillery bottling.

Region: India (Haryana).

ABV: 46%.

Age: NAS. Bottled in 2022.

Cask type: Ex-bourbon, ex-French wine, ex-PX sherry.

Price: $55 USD.

Natural Color. Non-chill-filtered.

Bottle open across approx. 1 month, notes taken leisurely across that period. Bold notes taken beneath the shoulder, regular-formatted notes taken further into the bottle past the halfway point, italicized notes taken towards the heel.

Nose: wood spice, vanilla, rum raisin ice cream, a bit of tropical fruit with an overripe funk, something vaguely herbal, menthol, mint cremes, carrot skins, canned peaches in syrup.

Palate: full-bodied and oily ~ tropical fruit up front with more of that overripe funk, more wood spice, some darker fruits poke through.

Finish: medium length ~ mint, slightly overripe oranges, papaya, goes a touch tannic.

Conclusion: This is surprisingly solid and interesting. I find myself having difficulty describing some of the notes and how they interact– this is substantially different from Scottish or American malt. I haven’t had any other whiskies from India, and thus do not know what notes to look for from the regional factors vs. the casks vs. the individual distillery. I will say it’s eminently drinkable, and the flavors feel very balanced here. It does exactly what I feel a whisky at this price point should do– make for a pleasant, engaging experience, but also generate excitement about exploring more malt from that country. I probably wouldn’t buy another one of this exact bottle, but there’s now a whole region on my radar that I hadn’t really been paying attention to before.

Final Score: 79.
