Tobermory 1995 Wilson & Morgan

Review by: Raygun

Tried much more Ledaig than Tobermory, but liked the Tobermory I’ve had. My first Wilson & Morgan, which is oddly an Italian IB: the name doesn’t exactly give that away.

Distillery: Tobermory

Bottler: Wilson & Morgan

Region: Islands

ABV: 46%

Age: Distilled in 1995. Bottled in 2011. No age statement, but 15-16 years.

Cask type: Refill sherry cask

Price: About $11 for the pour.

Color: Too dark to see. Natural color. Non-chill-filtered.

Nose: Pretty clear, if not overpowering, sherry influence. Figs, prunes, and sweet bean paste. An earthy kind of sherry.

Palate: Sweet and somewhat meaty. Soy sauce and sweet bean paste. Figs and something else, like cherries. Alcohol is a little prominent for 46%.

Finish: Sweet and savory still blending nicely. Not smoky, but somewhat meaty, a sort of roast pork with cherries and figs thing going on. Stronger oak than expected.

Conclusion: Very nice. The sherry is definitely there but not totally dominating. I like this kind of meaty and somewhat earthy flavor. Moderately sweet, and goes well with the meaty flavor. Very nice finish in particular.

Buy a bottle? I could see it, if I ever found one.

Final Score: 80
