St Nicholas Abbey 8yr “BRE” Single Cask

Review by: The Auditor

Review #1108; Rum #434

St Nicholas Abbey is a rum distillery in Barbados that is steeped in rich history. The site the distillery sits on no manufactured rum and sugar going back into the late 1600s but eventually stopped production. In 2006 the distillery was restarted with the help of Richard Seale who supplied his expertise and Foursquare’s rum to get them off the ground.

This is a single cask of rum from St. Nicholas Abbey. This rum was tasted by a group of folks at the Barbados Rum event who begged for some of this rum to be bottled at cask strength for the event which they relented and did.

Distillery: St Nicholas Abbey

Bottler:St Nicholas Abbey

Region: Barbados

ABV: 60%

Nose:  Floral, Lavender, Vanilla, Coriander, cinnamon, black pepper

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Lavender, Vanilla, Coriander, Black Pepper, toasted coconut

Finish: : Long finish, Floral, Coriander, Toasted Coconut, Black Pepper, puff pastry, cinnamon, vanilla

Conclusion: This is a great rum. It’s pungent, fruit forward, with a touch of spice and butterscotch to round it out. It doesn’t hit as high as some other Hampden rums I’ve had but it’s still delicious. It has a good amount of complexity and doesn’t register as over-oaked to me.

Final Score: 91
