Grander Rum Rye Finish

Review by: The Auditor

Review #1137; Rum #456

Grander is a bottler that bottles rum with no additives. The spirit is distilled in Panama from molasses and aged for 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels. It is then finished in ex-rye casks for 15 months before being bottled.

Distillery: Las Cabras

Bottler: Grander

Region: Panama

Still: Column Still

Cask: Ex-Bourbon 12 years, finished in ex-rye for 15 months

ABV: 50%

Nose: Peppery, Vanilla, a bit of coconut, Cinnamon, graham cracker

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Peppery, Vanilla, toasted coconut, cinnamon, graham cracker

Finish:  Medium length finish, cinnamon, peppery, vanilla, toasted coconut

Conclusion: I will admit, I came into this with fairly low expectations and came away moderately impressed. This packs more flavor than I expected. The cask influence is fairly strong, not a bad thing in this case, as those notes drive the whole experience. A bit of the rum peeks through with the toasted coconut and lots of spices from the rye cask. For the style, this is overall pretty decent. For a no additives, high column distilled rum, its actually pretty good.
