Review #1164; Rum #479

This sample was provided to me by a producer, distributor, or some other industry source free-of-charge. No compensation, outside of the sample, was received and there were no strings attached.

Shakara is a rum that is born out of a collaboration with La Maison & Velier. This rum was produced from molasses obtained from locally grown sugarcane in Thailand. After being distilled on a column still, the rum was then put into Ex-bourbon casks and aged for 12 years in Thailand, which is considered tropical. This was bottled with no additives.

Distillery: Secret

Bottler: La Maison & Velier

Region: Thailand

Still: Column

Cask: Ex-Bourbon 12 Years

ABV: 45.7%

Nose: Toasted Coconut, Vanilla, Dark Chocolate, bit of tea, waffle cone, cinnamon, nuttiness

Palate:  Medium mouthfeel, Toasted Coconut, Dark Chocolate, nuttiness, Waffle Cone, Vanilla

Finish:  Medium length finish, Toasted Coconut, Dark Chocolate, Nuttiness, Vanilla, Black Pepper

Conclusion: This is a very good, well made and aged molasses rum. It’s just that classic well aged molasses rum that is comforting and tasty. Coconut, Vanilla, a touch of nuttiness, good oak structure, and dark chocolate make for a really delicious rum. This isn’t challenging at all, but that is a good thing. . Given the category this competes in, especially with the $50-$60 range depending on your market, I’ll be inclined to pick up a bottle.
