Redbreast 12 Cask Strength 2019

Review by: Raygun

Redbreast is one of the many Midleton brands, also the producer of Jameson, the Spots, Powers, etc. Must be the largest producer in Ireland, I’m sure. Redbreast is triple distilled single pot still, so containing some unmalted barley. I believe this is released twice a year, at least based on the B2/19 batch number. Had the standard 12, which I found pretty uninteresting. Let’s see how this is. Reviewed from a sample. Rested for 10 minutes.

Distillery: Midleton (Redbreast)

Bottler: Midleton

Region/style: Irish single pot still

ABV: 55.8%

Age: 12 years. Released in 2019, batch B2/19.

Cask type: Bourbon and sherry casks

Color: 1.2 chestnut. Probably colored and almost surely chill-filtered.

Price: Around $110 for current releases

Nose: Smells like cereal, with a sherry tinge. In the neighborhood of Raisin Bran, with something like sugar smacks. Apple cider donuts.

Palate: Somewhat more fruit. Apples and pears joining the raisins. With a big helping of cereal. Definite barley flavor, caramel apples, and a hit of something spicy. Cinnamon, but something more as well. A little ginger bite.

Finish: More cereal with apples, raisins, and a touch of caramel and honey with the gingery bite again. Also graham crackers. Some orange zest comes out. Shortbread. A little raw here.

Conclusion: Much better than RB 12. Not boring at all. Has a little roughness to it, but overall it’s a nice pour. Lots of cereal, with a nice addition of fruit and spice. I like the apple donut or turnover it has going on. Good stuff.

Buy a bottle? Would have been an easier call back when it was 80 or 90. 110 is a tougher sell..

Score: 80

Scoring Legend:

  • 95-100: As good as it gets. Jaw-dropping, eye-widening, unforgettable whisky.
  • 90-94: Sublime, a personal favorite in its category. (Kavalan Solist Manzanilla)
  • 85-89: Excellent, a standout dram. (Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique)
  • 80-84: Quite good. Quality stuff. (Green Spot Chateau Leoville Barton)
  • 75-79: Decent whisky worth tasting. (Amrut Peated CS)
  • 70-74: Meh. It’s definitely drinkable, but it can do better. (Taketsuru Pure Malt)
  • 60-69: Not so good. I might not turn down a glass if I needed a drink. (Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve)
  • 50-59: Save it for mixing. (Bushmills 10 Malt)
  • 0-49: Blech.

Thank you. I was beginning to think I was the only one. Uninteresting AND overpriced!
