Dailuaine 13 (2008) Lady of the Glen

Review by: Raygun

Another Diageo distillery that rarely gets the OB treatment. IBs aren’t too hard to find. Although it doesn’t use worm tubs, the condensers are partly stainless steel, which produces a similar effect. I’ve generally preferred Dailuaine in bourbon casks. This will be my first try with PX. Reviewed from a sample. Rested about 15 minutes.

Distillery: Dailuaine

Bottler: Lady of the Glen

Region/style: Speyside single malt Scotch

ABV: 53.7%

Age: 13 years. Distilled on March 26, 2008 and bottled on January 20, 2022.

Cask type: Refill hogshead for 12 years, then finished in a first-fill PX sherry cask #303813, 265 bottles.

Color: 1.6 mahogany. Natural color. Non-chill-filtered.

Nose: Definitely has some PX syrupy smell, but the malt isn’t lost. Dates, cherry juice, and wax. Damp wood.

Palate: Not too concentrated. Cherry soda, dates, and some vanilla cream. Sweet bean paste. A touch of damp forest. Pretty well balanced, with the PX not dominating everything.

Finish: Pleasantly fruity again, with cherry vanilla ice cream and dates. Some honey and sweet bean paste. Not much oak to speak of.

Conclusion: I’m not often in the mood for PX, and I like that this isn’t so cask-dominated. Sweet, but not excessively so. Still get some aspects of Dailuaine character in the mild umami character. Not the most complex thing out there, but does what it does well.

Buy a bottle? I’m good with a sample  s.
