Glenburgie 21 (1995) Signatory Vintage

Review by: Raygun

Heard good things about these Signatory Glenburgies from the mid 1990s, mainly from Chief Burgie Stan Whisky Turnip. Had another 95 that I thoroughly enjoyed, so I figured this would be a good bet. Selected by and bottled for K&L Wines in California. Reviewed from a bar pour.

Distillery: Glenburgie

Bottler: Signatory Vintage for K&L

Region/style: Speyside single malt Scotch

ABV: 55.3%. Cask strength.

Age: 21 years old. Distilled on June 13, 1995 and bottled on September 8, 2016.

Cask type: Hogshead #6504, 254 bottles.

Color: Too dark to tell. Natural color and non-chillfiltered.

Nose: Not so tropical, but a very nicely fruity Glenburgie. Peaches, oranges, mangoes, and some Starburst candies. There’s a bit of something herbaceous, something I’ve had in other Burgies.

Palate: Lovely mouthfeel. Herbaceous again, with a little grass. Then there’s the fruit salad. Peaches, mangoes, passion fruit. Gets a little more tropical, with an appealing brightness. Maple syrup.

Finish: A little brown sugar and caramel comes out. Same fruit as the palate, and there’s the orange again. Some drying oak and a touch of whipped cream.

Conclusion: Hits the spot. Fruity, and just a little hint of herbal and oak bitterness to offset the sweetness. Very well balanced. Drinks easily, and plenty to analyze as well. I’d say not quite as good as the older 1995 I had recently, but I’m sure cheaper as well. Would love a bottle.

Score: 86
