Blackadder Raw Cask Fiji 9 Year 2009

Review by: The Auditor

Review #1344; Rum #647

Blackadder is a European independent bottler known for their Raw Cask series, which usually includes bits of sediment in the bottle (also present in this sample bottle). This rum was distilled at South Pacific Distilleries, aged in Europe before being bottled at cask strength with no additives from a single cask.

Distillery: South Pacific Distillers

Bottler: Blackadder

Region: Fiji

Still: Unknown

ABV: 64.1%

Nose:  Bit of cement glue, Black Pepper, Brine, Vanilla, Dirty Chai, Dark Chocolate

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Vanilla, Plastic Bag, Dirty Chair, Dark Chocolate, Earthy, Leather

Finish:  Long length finish, Plastic Bag, Black Pepper, Earthy, Dark Chocolate, Dirty Chai, Leather

Conclusion: I don’t usually go for the longer aged Fiji’s but I’ve had this particular bottling a few times now and have always considered it among the best bottlings of SPD I’ve had. It bursts with flavor, with some of that industrial plastic backbone not tempered by age, a bit of fruits and spices help to balance that out and the finish goes on forever. This is the definition of a challenging dram that you only need a little, but you will be well rewarded for sitting with this one for a long while.

Final Score: 91
