Privateer Maiden Voyage

Review by: The Auditor

Review #1351; Rum #654

Here we have a bottling of rum from Privateer, an American rum distiller located in Ipswich, Massachusetts. This rum was distilled from molasses on a pot and column still. This rum was then put into new American Oak where it aged for 4 years and two months before being bottled at cask strength with no additives for Showcase Wine & Spirits in partnership with The Rum Curious Club.

Distillery: Privateer

Bottler: Privateer

Region: USA

Still: Pot & Column

ABV: 57.6%

Nose: Vanilla, Black Pepper, Dark Chocolate, Toasted Coconut, Orange Peel

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel, Vanilla, Toasted Coconut, Dark Chocolate, hint of Coffee

Finish:  Medium length finish, Black Pepper, Vanilla, Toasted Coconut, Coffee, Orange Peel

Conclusion: I tend to like the rums Privateer puts out and this one is no exception. I even like it in New American Oak which is even more surprising (but their bottled in bond is a great bottle that is always available). The flavors here are great, big pops of vanilla and dark chocolate, some toasted coconut as well. The bits of orange slice bring some good fruit as well. Overall it’s a great bottle from Privateer.

Final Score: 88
