Review #1355; Rum #658
Here we have a rum bottle by Planteray / Plantation / Ferrand, that lover of Ferrand cask finished in France to add terroir. This rum was distilled from molasses at Beenleigh Australia, it aged for 13 years in bourbon casks in Tropical conditions before undergoing a year of finishing in Ferrand casks in Europe before being bottled, shockingly, with no added sugar. Of note this is fermented with S. Pombe yeast so haters beware!
Distillery: Beenleigh
Bottler: Ferrand/Plantation/Planteray
Region: Australia
Still: Pot
ABV: 49.3%
Nose: Grapefruit, Pine needle, Vanilla
Palate: Light mouthfeel, Grapefruit, Pine Needle, Vanilla, Black Pepper
Finish: Short finish, Black Pepper, bit of Grapefruit, Pine needle
Conclusion:For a 2007 Beenleigh release, a vintage that I have loved in the past, this one is pretty disappointing. It lacks the punch and depth the other releases have had whether that is due to the finish or the low proof I’m not 100% sure. It has that grapefruit note I like but it tastes watered down. Really disappointing overall.
I don’t go out of my way to review stuff from this brand as I do not buy it but since someone gave me a sample I decided to give it the ole college try. Given Ferrand fighting the Barbados rum Gi, trying to change the Jamaica rum GI, this rum here shows the 3rd issue I have with their rums, it tends to be very boring and samey tasting. I don’t buy their rum for any reason and will encourage folks not to buy it either.
