Glen Elgin 23 (1995) The Whisky Agency

Review by: Raygun

This Glen Elgin was bottled by the German IB The Whisky Agency for the Taichung Whisky Society. Seems like a split cask, because there’s another bottling with the exact same specs but a different label. 88 bottles would be a very short hogshead, so a split cask makes more sense. The Whisky Agency has a good reputation, but tends to be expensive and I haven’t tried too many. Reviewed from a bar pour. Rested about 10 minutes.

Distillery: Glen Elgin

Bottler: The Whisky Agency

Region/style: Speyside single malt Scotch

ABV: 48.7%. Cask strength.

Age: 23 years old. Distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2019.

Cask type: Hogshead, 88 bottles.

Color: Too dark to tell. Natural color and non-chill-filtered.

Nose: Fruity at first sniff, and it’s got that furniture wax kind of smell that is a sign of age to me. Pears, oranges, grapefruit, and a bit of papaya.

Palate: Nice mouthfeel even at a fairly low ABV. Nice waxy quality. Fruit drizzled with honey and some scones. Good oak presence, but not like chewing on furniture. Asian pear, orange, and red grapes.

Finish: Heavier on the furniture wax and some almonds. More of the citrus and papaya. No heat at all, and it’s got nice length.

Conclusion: No huge surprises here, except maybe the waxy texture is not something I remember in other Glen Elgins. A nicely aged bourbon cask that tends toward the fruity and honey side, and I’m not going to complain about that at all. The kind of thing I’d be happy to drink anytime.

Score: 83
