Old Particular is a Douglas Laing brand. More typically bottled at 48.4% (not sure how they arrived at that strength), but these store picks don’t follow that. This was bottled for K&L. Glenturret was recently purchased by Lalique and given a new OB line. It produces mostly unpeated spirits, but there’s some peated which mostly goes under the name Ruadh Maor (or Mhor). Rested about 15 minutes.
Distillery: Glenturret
Bottler: Douglas Laing
Region/style: Highland single malt Scotch
ABV: 55.8%
Age: 17 years. Distilled in March 2004 and bottled in October 2021.
Cask type: Sherry puncheon, DL14898, 248 bottles.
Color: 1.6 mahogany. Natural color and chill-filtered.
Nose: Rich and deep. Prunes, cherry sauce, canned peaches, tobacco leaf, and a bit of magic marker. Some musty basement typical of Oloroso.
Palate: Yup, that’s a lot of sherry. Maintains some malt character though. Prunes, plum sauce, raisins, sweet bean paste, and maraschino cherry. Has an herbal side as well with thyme and some mint. Very thick. Fruity, but not overly sweet. Has a lot of power and richness.
Finish: Rich, thick, fruity sherry again. Plum sauce, cherry soda, sweet bean paste. Some fruit tea and grape candies. Hefty dose of oak, but doesn’t get overly tannic. Nice woody thyme flavor. Good length and no bitterness to speak of.
Conclusion: I don’t seek out big sherry flavors often these days, but this maintains some distinctive character. It’s not just another generic sherry bomb. I can connect the DNA to the Glenturret OBs I’ve tried, even as it’s a level up over those. Brings some umami flavor, but also a little brighter than most sherry casks. Good combination.
