Kilkerran aged 15 years in a bourbon barrel and bottled at cask strength? Sign me up. The 16 has mixed maturation and isn’t cask strength. Some of the 8CS releases are bourbon maturation, but obviously much younger. There have been a few such limited releases, including this one that was part of the warehouse tasting a year or so ago. Thanks to a friend for sharing this. Reviewed from a sample. Rested about 15 minutes.
Distillery: Glengyle
Bottler: Glengyle
Region/style: Campbeltown single malt Scotch
ABV: 56.9%. Cask strength.
Age: 15 years old. Distilled in May 2009 and bottled in April 2025.
Cask type: Fresh bourbon barrel
Color: 1.3 russet. Natural color and non-chill-filtered.
Nose: Lots of the caramel a fresh bourbon cask can bring. Hints of brine and some coal dust. Cereal, a little orange, and some grunge. The Campbeltown DNA is clear.
Palate: Caramel, almonds, and some pastry. Like an almond croissant. Definite hit of salt and there’s a citrusy flavor. Both orange and lemon. There’s the dirty, industrial edge I notice from Kilkerran. Good weight and it’s got plenty of flavor. The oak is pretty strong and brings some spice flavor.
Finish: The industrial flavor continues, along with caramel and a bit of lemon. Got some significant oak, but not too drying. Peach tea with honey. Brings some heat. The cask char comes through, which is no surprise when the cask sediment was visible in the bottle.
Conclusion: Very good stuff, though it requires high oak tolerance. I might have preferred a refill barrel or at least a hogshead. Nevertheless, it’s an excellent pour. I like it considerably more than the 16 I had actually. A bourbon cask version of their Work in Progress series a few years ago was my previous favorite Kilkerran. I think I have a new favorite now.
