Scotch Whisky Review #188: Signatory Vintage Glenturret 29 Year Bourbon Cask (1989)

This review was done blind, sample bottle was simply labelled as a “Milky Mystery”

Color: 0.2, Pale Straw. Natural Color.

Nose: (according to the wife) It’s really bubbly. It smells like champagne with lots of light, white grapes and a bit of booze and sweetness.

Palate: Very light and summery. The champagne notes continue with some champagne grapes. It’s joined by a bit of fresh green apple. A bit of malt biscuit pops in towards the end with a bit of lemon zest.

Finish: Medium in length. The malt biscuit and green apple finish this out.

Guess: Something Speyside in a white wine cask. Or perhaps it’s an Arran? The Arran Sauternes Cask might fit the bill.

Conclusion: I’ve had a few whiskies now that taste like some other drink. If you were to add a little bit of carbonated water to this, I would hazard to guess you would fool most people into thinking this was a bottle of bubbly. It’s light, it’s fruity, it’s delightful and easy to drink. I was so surprised to see that this was aged in bourbon casks for nearly 30 years, none of the usual bourbon notes seem to be present. Very tasty whisky and I am so glad to have been able to try this.
