Review #1469; Rum #768
Here we have a bottle of rum from Independent bottler The Colours of Rum who is new to me.
This rum was distilled from molasses at the now closed Caroni distillery located in Trinidad. The rum was distilled on a column still and aged for 11 years in tropical weather. It then aged for another 13 years in Europe in an ex-whisky cask before being bottled at cask strength.
Distillery: Caroni
Bottler: The Colours of Rum
Region: Trinidad
Still: Column
ABV: 62.9%
Nose: Menthol, Cement Glue, Raspberry, Fresh Mango, Motor Oil, Dark Chocolate, Black Tea, Coffee
Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Menthol, Hydraulic Fluid, Raspberry, Motor Oil, Dark Chocolate, Black Tea, Orange Peel, Allspice, Coffee
Finish: Medium length Finish, Orange Peel, Allspice, Black Tea, Dark Chocolate, Raspberry, Menthol
Perhaps the most oak forward Caroni I have tasted. There’s a nice backbone of somewhat aggressive oak spice here and normally that is a big detractor. But given the power of the base distillate, its quite charming. It holds its own against the industrial, mechanics garage. If you like grungy, this is the Caroni for it as it leans far more into the savory side of things with just small pops of fruit sweetness to give relief. This is an excellent rum, a weird one for sure, and one that will challenge you.
