Review #1470; Rum #769
Here we have a bottle of rum from American Independent bottlers Raising Glasses, who I must say are much braver than I ever could be with this name and photo they used for this bottle. This is a molasses based rum from the Beenleigh distillery located in Australia. Distilled and fermentd using S pombe yeast this rum aged for 12 years in Australia, 5 years in the EU, and 1 year in the US with a 10 month finish in a Madeira rum cask. Will this rum hold up to the film its references? We can only hope the negotiations to acquire it were short.
Distillery: Beenleigh
Bottler: Raising Glasses
Region: Australia
Still: Column and Pot
ABV: 68.1%
Nose: Grapefruit, Minerality, Red Currants, Blackberries, Mint, Peach
Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Grapefruit, Minerality, Star Anise, Blackberries, Red Currant, Peach
Finish: Medium length finish, Grapefruit, Blackberry, Mint, Coriander, Peach
Bold, punchy, but still drinks below its proof. Unlike the movie, this is a real winner. It has that wonderful grapefruit forward backbone, a bunch of other fruits, some nice mint, and a hint of spice to tie it all together. There’s not much in terms of Sulphur for the finish for me. This is an excellent pairing of distillate and cask finish here. What a wonderful bottle of rum. Luckily, no Jar Jar binks to show up and ruin everything.
