Circle Hook Agricole Style B1 2 Yr

Review #1516; Rum #815

This is rum from Circle Hook, a distillery located in Mississippi, United States. This rum was made from Mississippi grown sugarcane on site at the distillery that was crushed for juice, fermented, distilled in a pot still, then aged for 2 years in new American oak casks before bottling with no additives. Im not a fan of calling thing agricole style, which belongs to Agricole producers. Besides that, let us see how this is.

Distillery: Circle Hook

Bottler:  Circle Hook

Region: Mississippi

Still: Pot

ABV: 41.5%

Nose: Lemon, Vanilla, Black Tea, Grassy

Palate: Light Mouthfeel, Black Tea, Grassy, Lemon, Allspice, Vanilla

Finish: Medium length finish, Nutty, Black Pepper, Black Tea, Grassy, Vanilla, Allspice

This falls into that weird spot of aged cane juice rum for me. Its not quite as vibrant as unaged cane juice rum and it hasn’t had the time to develop those long aged flavors. New charred oak is such a sledgehammer here that it covers up a lot. It has some interesting things going on for sure, but I think it needs longer in cask. Fresh cane juice is tricky so Circle Hook needs to be commended for dabbling in it at all.

Final Score: 82
